In October 1977 the centenary of the Grote Bosatlas (Great Bos Atlas), the most widely used of Dutch school atlases, was celebrated by its publishers, the Geographical Cartographic Institute Wolters-Noordhof of Groningen. The author of this article, himself a former editor of the Bos Atlas, accredits its long and successful life to a combination of factors: (1) the Netherlands secondary education system in which geography was solidly anchored; (2) careful management and clever marketing, aided by the founding of a 'family of atlases' which enabled a multiple use of its maps; (3) recruitment of editors from the world of geography teachers in secondary education, with experience in the use of atlases for classroom tuition; (4) close contacts with atlas users, careful noting of trends and changing concepts in school geography, willingness to introduce innovations wherever desirable; (5) good legibility and up-to-date maps; (6) cautiousness in the repro and printing sector, relying on tried and tested techniques.
