The selection of class intervals for choroplethic maps is approached with the objective of maximizing the visual correspondence between the variable to be categorized and a referent variable with which it is associated. A measure of visual correlation is developed to serve as the objective function for an algorithm which locates breaks between classes, one at a time, and also tests each stage in the solution process for stability. A simple, ten-area example and a more comprehensive, five-variable application using forty-eight areal units are used in discussing the algorithm's operation and effectiveness. Possible modifications to the procedure are also considered.
