To develop an effective classification for a set of data can be very time-consuming in choropleth mapping. This paper presents a computer program written in BASIC language as a solution to this problem. The program will perform three major tasks. First, class limits will be computed upon the choice of classification method and the number of classes. There are seven methods to choose from: quintiles, arithmetic, geometric, reciprocal, the use of mean and standard deviation, and nested-means. An eighth option is included in case the user decides to use his own class limits. The number of classes can be from three to eight. Second, class frequencies will be compiled. Third, the D value, a measure of the effectiveness of data classification as proposed by Jenks and Coulson, will be computed.
