This paper describes how certain mathematical smoothing operations can be applied to cartographic grid models using software designed to run on an array processor or supercomputer. The grids may have imbedded surface discontinuities, grid nodes with no assigned node values and grid nodes with fixed values. Many computer programs have been written to produce and to process grids with these characteristics, but when executed against large grids on standard sequential computers those programs use large amounts of computer time. One way to achieve significantly faster grid processing is to use algorithms which utilize the non-standard computer architectures provided by array processors or supercomputers
