The author traces the mapping of British Columbia from the time of Spanish voyages of exploration in the late 18th Century through to the detailed topographic mapping of the 1970s. Hydrographic surveys of the coasts were followed in the first half of the 19th Century by exploratory surveys inland along river routes. Cadastral and topographic mapping gained impetus from permanent settlement and resource development during the latter half of the 19th Century. The work of early surveyors is detailed, and the progress of mapping is delineated through the work of successive Surveyors-general and the gradual development of provincial departments of government
