Few people know how to use maps because they do not know in the first place what a map is and what it its significance, and secondly, they do not know how to read it in order to understand it. The best way to find out the multiple uses of maps is to determine who the users are. There are two kinds of users - the amateur and the professional. In the first category belong the automobile driver, the pedestrian walking with a city map, and the map collector who studies his maps in an armchair. In the second category belong the airplane pilots and navigators, the meteorologists, the innumerable scientists that use maps to depict their work, the professionals in the armed forces, the engineers, and the sailors and pilots of the seven seas of the world
