The data products and delivery mechanisms provided by research institutes and government agencies are lagging behind the needs and expectations of the private sector, regulatory agencies, and academia. This situation is particularly acute in the environmental arena, in which the analysis of complex processes frequently requires the integration of data and information collected by independent researchers and agencies. However, a variety of technical, institutional, and physical barriers inhibits the fluid communication of data and information locally, nationally, and internationally. To overcome these barriers, data and information must be placed into a common modelling, management, and analysis framework by referencing it to a spatiotemporal architecture. The proposed framework for integrated spatiotemporal data management systems unites an active information repository system with a standards-based spatiotemporal data model. The key to unification is a core data model that provides an extensible taxonomy of abstract data types for creating specialized data definitions for different application areas. The core model is complemented by an architecture that supports graphical user interfaces, data integration, and linkages to analytical packages
