Overlap is a common occurrence on most graduated circle maps, but little is known about the relationship between overlap and circle size estimation. A psychophysical test was conducted using maps with varying amounts of circle overlap and different methods of overlap portrayal. Results indicate that "transparent" overlap portrayal is more effective in terms of estimation error than conventional "cut-out" circles.
