This essay outlines the epistemic practices evident in work of the Berlin circle of historical anthropologists, placing it – unusually – in proximity to other forms of such research. The group’s defining characteristic is here seen as an appropriation of the literary tradition of the conceptual image: in its specific mediation between past and present, and its cultivation of epistemic approaches extending from dilettantism to melancholy and onward to an aristocratic stance
