The essay presents the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) as a predominantly aesthetically oriented movement and an independent literary aesthetic. The main contents as well as the aesthetic production and reception postulates of the Neue Sachlichkeit will be discussed on the basis of this view. The article also takes into consideration the important poetological premises of this literature, which are linked to the term Sachlichkeit. The study follows the Neue Sachlichkeit from its origin as an anti-expressionist movement in the early 1920s to its development and establishment as a ›new naturalism‹ within the literature of the Weimarer Republik. The point of departure here is the thesis that the Neue Sachlichkeit can be considered the last phase of modernism
