Thirty male adult rats were investigated to compare the nutritive value of brown beans (BP); dehulled brown beans (DBP); white beans (WP); dehulled white beans (DWP); bambara groundnut (BG); dehulled bambara groundnut (DBG), supplemented with rice flour (R) in various blends to provide 2 g N/100 g of the diet daily for a 12‐day N balance study. The rats were allotted to six groups of five rats such that differences in body weight of each group did not exceed 5 g. Dehulling markedly improved protein nutriture of brown bean diets as judged by N. intake, digestibility and retention. The B V for rats fed diets containing brown beans was higher than for those fed other test diets. The results appear to suggest that brown beans, regardless of treatment, contained better quality protein than other legumes
