This article explores the potential and limits of the popular satire theatre Kotéba in transporting critical narratives into the Malian public sphere. It investigates how Kotéba can be perceived as a means of contestation. Through the accounts of two cultural agents who were actively implicated in creating plays and censorship-processes during the Moussa Traoré regime (1968-1991), the author traces Kotéba’s development and social function to discuss the interconnection of theatre, narrative and contestation. The focus on narrated memories favors a backstage perspective, allowing insight into the otherwise hidden processes which make “performing contestation” possible
