This article describes the different transformations of political structures among the Wawa (Cameroon). The analysis of the myths and rites linked to the strange position of the « chief » (jaoro) allows us to think that the Wawa have invested him of all the negative aspects of sacred kingship as a reaction against his nomination imposed by the Fulbe, and as a mean to control his new and threatening power
