To classify the world of sickness, the Evuzok of Cameroun combine descriptive terms and terms of etiological significance. Each series of these terms is a frame of reference both autonomous and complementary. Autonomous, because each sub-system shows particular aspects of the illness, at the same time being independent of each other; complementary, because it is indispen- sable to link them up in order to grap the full significance of each pathological whole. The terms of the first frame of reference (section II : the descriptive subsystem) designate the illnesses according ot their empiric reality. Sickness is treated as a simple phenomenon of nature. The terms of the second frame of reference (the etiological sub-system) are a type of lexical base of religious, magical and social significance, to which all the illnesses which have been identified are ascribed, named and classified according to the rules of the descriptive sub-system. Illness is seen as a religious experience and a social phenomenon. The linking up of these two sub-systems is found in the frame of diagnostics (section III). The medical categories as a whole which make up the Evuzok nosographic are analysed as much on the formal or terminological level as on the contextual or extra-linguistic level. This method of approach allows one to detect the elementary components which make up the significance of each pathological whole, and to compare them to each other, so as to classify and structure these meaningful units according to the elementary components they have in common
