Landsat I, the first satellite scanning the earth, was launched 20 years ago. For geographers and archeologists involved in African Studies, the images sent back were marvels that partly confirmed what was already known or had already been located. But they also bore information about poorly known places and brought to light the unexpected. Unsed empirically at first, these images were soon processed by computers. A few examples from the archeological program on the In Gall and Tegidda-n-Tesemt areas of Niger are cited that have contributed to the archeological exploration of the northern Sahel
