Among the many religious paths that coexist in an urban setting (Libreville, Gabon), the various modes of visionary experience (travel, trance, dream, revelation) and the discourses which structure this experience and provide it with social reality, occupy an essential and decisive place. This article shows how such discursive behaviour marks out differences between initiation and conversion, vision and possession, and election and commitment, all the while contributing to a hybridisation of the forms of religious experience and construction of self
