Some look at America and see only diversity, conspiracy, and struggle. When I look at America, especially its music history, I am struck by the interrelationships among its diverse personalities. Sometimes these are obvious, but more often they are not. And it is precisely the job of pointing out these connections, obscured by fashionable opinion or ignorance, historians should undertake. A good case in point is the unlikely link among such subjects as the venerable grande dame of twentieth-century opera, Mrs. August Belmont; Commodore Matthew C. Perry, the nineteenth-century American naval hero; and the so-called Japanese Minstrels
