A little-known form of West Sumatran folk theatre, randai, is given a concise description here covering its origins, troupe composition, and performative techniques. Of special concern to the author is the close relationship of the martial art called silek to the dance and movement of randai. Kirstin Pauka is a recent Ph.D. from the University of Hawai'i. This article is based on her dissertation, from which she has also produced an interactive CD-ROM that includes additional graphics, photographs, sound and video examples of randai. Dr Pauka would be happy to supply more details to those who are interested
