Cultural inheritance might now be better described as a pile of wreckage, the creative person having the task of making the best of things. Alienation from an enfolding tradition can be a chance for self-perception leading to a more rooted awareness of what is shared. Within a non-linear idea of time the wreckage can be a source and the qualities of “life itself”, or being, become more immediately manifest. The current aesthetics of brutality and spectacle are a futile attempt to overcome isolation by subservience to the prevalent social value of power. An alternative is the idea of autonomy, here described as the co-existence and dialogue between the artist's inner and outer worlds
