In 1970 Steve Reich made “Some Optimistic Predictions about the Future of Music”. These predictions, along with some additional comments written between 1969 and 1974, form an introduction to three separate, but related articles. The first, Notes on the Ensemble (1973) has appeared previously in the collection Writings About Music (co-published by the Press of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and New York University Press, 1974). Chamber Music — An Expanded View, originally read as the keynote address to the annual meeting of Chamber Music America in 1989, and On the Size and Seating of an Orchestra (1990) are printed here for the first time.
