B tween 1992 and 1997, I spent more than twenty months conducting an ethnographic study of Indian formation, white supremacy, and its contestation in the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais, Espirito 3 Santo, Rio de Janeiro, and southern Bahia.' I examine how land is linked to indigenous resurgence and the territorialization of Indianness and why land is of such central concern to Indians in eastern Brazil
