The Alsacians Commuters to the « Region Su'dlicher Oberrhein » in Baden-Wurttemberg in the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1982, approx. 37 000 Alsacians (almost 6 % of those employed in industry and trade) commuted to work in foreign countries, approx. 15 600 in the Federal Republic of Germany. A study was carried out on 5 600 commuters crossing the border into the Region Siidlicher Oberrhein in Baden Wiirttemberg. The average age was 32 years ; in comparison to German employees, they had a lower school education and were not as qualified in their professions ; and the quota of labourers was higher. Their working-places were concentrated in seven localities in Baden. The desire to have a job and a better income were the main motives. Alsacian employees were not more threatened by dismissal than their German colleagues
