A description is given of activities of the Central Institute of Statistics of Italy directed toward: a) the publication of an Atlas including some 400 «Rational» maps representing the territorial distribution of demographic, economic and spatial phenomena, b) the preparation of a volume summarizing the characteristics of those distributions by means of «geostatistical parameters», c) standardisation of graphical statistical procedures
