This text is an excerpt from the book Sur écoute : esthétique de l’espionnage (All Ears: The Aesthetics of Espionage) first published by Éditions de Minuit in 2007. Peter Szendy analyzes the relationship between eavesdropping in politics, eavesdropping in other contexts, and numerous derivative auditory practices resulting from the political and social applications of listening, as well as from the use of auditory prostheses and devices. Szendy simultaneously presents an alternative genealogy of modernity, distinct from the visual one, in which social mechanisms of control as described by Gilles Deleuze progressively replace surveillance techniques as seen in the works of Jeremy Bentham and later Michel Foucault
