We Americans who came to live...in Gleann Cholm Cille, Ireland, felt a blurring of distinctions when it came to being tourists versus being locals. The fact of the matter was that we were tourists...for all of us, the first time in Gleann Cholm Cille. We had no idea what to expect and no idea what we were going to see... We visited Dublin, Belfast, Derry, and took in all the local sites... [However,] because the majority of our time was spent in this one village, we really had to take the time to get to know the locals and learn about their customs. From the first day, we knew who Brady the bartender was and the locals that visited Biddy's every night. We got to know John, Christopher, and William not as Irish people...as real people. Several of these friendships have continued (College of Charleston student, 2004)
