Yawa, a 32-year-old Togolese woman from a small community just outside of Lomé, had always been told that women with HIV were women "who move from man to man," something she had avoided. After collapsing in the market one afternoon, Yawa visited a local hospital where she was diagnosed with a fever and sent home. Over the next five months, Yawa's fever persisted and developed into a rash that covered her entire body. Returning to the same hospital, she agreed to a test and was diagnosed with HIV. As a woman who had maintained what she felt was a healthy lifestyle and avoided behavior that she understood was associated with disease, an HIV diagnosis took her by surprise
