The birth of a child is a major life-cycle event in all societies, thus pregnancy, birth, and the post-partum period are culturally shaped and accompanied by rites of passage that help mother and new child into the appropriate status and role. This cultural shaping of biological processes varies significantly from society to society and strongly reflects prevailing cultural values
