This analysis of the first two sections of Kontakte für elektronische Klänge, Klavier und Schlagzeug uses terminology derived from Pierre Schaeffer's Programme de la Recherche Musicale. A brief summary of the relevant aspects of Schaefferian theory and analogical thought is presented. Sound objects are classified and described principally by means of aural analysis rather than the score. Contacts are investigated between synthesised and instrumental sounds. Furthermore, the notion of a contact is elaborated to include correspondences between more general characteristics of sound behaviour and performance practice. Transcriptions and tables of sound features complement the written commentaries
