Allan G. Gruchy died on 19 Februry 1990 at the age of 83. With his passing the US institutionalist movement lost one of its major figures. In future histories of institutionalism Allan Gruchy will figure prominently: as one of the small group of people who sustained the movement through its difficult postwar years; as institutionalism's primary chronicler and elucidator; and as the consistent, and persistent, advocate of national economic planning. But Allan Gruchy was much more than that. The respect and affection so many people, including myself, felt for him were generated by the whole person. What follows is a brief expression of my own particular appreciation of Allan and his work
