The Italian notebooks of Richard Symonds (1617–60) not only show how an Englishman sought out words of art in Rome during his exile after the Civil War, but also shed new light on the collection that he visited. His account of a visit to the Palazzo Farnese relies far more on first-hand observation than those left by any previous British visitor to the palace; unlike his fellow-countryman, John Evelyn, Symonds describes words in the collection that were often overlooked.
