One of the installations at this year's Grahamstown Festival displayed what was recognizably once a tennis racquet, now artfully transformed through a covering of intricately patterned beading. The description introducing the Engaging Modernities exhibition, notes that when cultures meet, values are inevitably transformed and inverted, and this focus on intercultural collisions, encounters and appropriations points to a dominant theme for the festival itself, across all its facets
