This report discusses the high points of the 1996 Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (Little Karoo National Festival of the Arts) which celebrated its second anniversary earlier this year. The festival, which takes place in Oudtshoorn has already experienced a 600% growth since its inception. A largely Afrikaans festival, this year's Oudshoorn experience attracted an interesting mix of South African theatrical events, and a number of shows highlighted the growing concern for cross-cultural pollination within the entertainment milieu. A number of new plays which made their debut in Oudshoorn are discussed, including Deon Opperman's five hour epic, Donkerland (“Dark Land”) and Ilse van Hemert's production of Eugene Marais' Uit die Bloute (“Out of the Blue”). The article discusses both the Main festival and Fringe shows
