Annie Sprinkle and Veronica Vera, two bona fide feminist/activist porn stars and SEX NATIONAL TREASURES,* came to the ART/LIFE INSTITUTE, Kingston, NY, for a one-week residency, Summer I987, becoming the fifth and sixth participants in the reach-out program which is one aspect of 7 YEARS OF LIVING ART (plate I). When I designed the 7-year project, I intuited that I would be doing it alone-living alone, that is, in upstate NY. Both aspects were frightening: upstate and living alone. And I knew that a self-imposed isolation would result from the choice. So I wrote into my statement of purpose an invitation for others to collaborate with me. After three years of the experiment, my intuition to do this has proven correct... so now the somewhat hermetic research project with solo journeys to psychic/psychological places which this kind of structure allows-this self-imposed exile-has visitors and fellow researchers. Each time is different because of the individual needs and chemistries involved, but in general we do what I do all year-keep a monastic schedule, eat rice and beans, live frugally (a little toilet paper, lights off, cold water baths, etc.) so that structure gets substituted for worldly success, dreaming for TV, walking for cars, and awareness for entertainment. In 7 days we visualize and experience the 7 chakras, one a day, and then perform from that chakra each night, after having spent the day coming from that particular energy. At the end of the residency, participants receive a performance/saint certificate
