BERLIN, September 1991 It is a ruin. And it is supposed to stay one. scrap metal, the dumping ground, and the scaffolding; the paintings and the sculptures all around the house are just as much a part of its atmosphere as the construction workers, the tourists, the reporters, and the prostitutes further down the street. The house itself is art, says one of the squatters, who are mainly visual artists. What he means is not only that the building is art because of the way it looks, but also because it is a center in which painters, performers, and musicians can work together with the freedom to experiment and little economic pressure. house was built between I907 and I9I0. What stands out most is a huge decaying arch in front, the architectually valuable part of the house. original sculptures have almost fallen off and the squatters have attached modern figures and puppetlike objects to it. Most of the back wall is missing, revealing ten separate rooms, sort of like an oldfashioned dollhouse. remaining part of the wall is being painted, itself becoming a piece of art. A wide, empty space in the back is covered with sand, trash, and scrap sculptures. group DNTT-with members from Berlin, London, and Barcelona-used this whole environment to do their Pyrotechnical Performance, in which they combined acrobatics with a fire show
