The French have an expression for it: un instrument de travail indispensable. This book is indeed an indispensable tool for scholars working on the history of the complex entity now known as l'Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris, although at 4 centimeters thick and weighing 1.5 kilos it is not the sort of reference work that will slip easily into your laptop carrying case. The collections of the AP-HP, which incorporate the archives and publications of its predecessors, occupy 40 linear kilometers and include documents from 140 hospitals, hospices, and foundations. They are an exceptionally rich source for the history of welfare, public health, and the city of Paris, even though as much as 90 percent of the original holdings may have been destroyed in May 1871, when supporters of the revolutionary Commune of Paris burned the city hall. A detailed guide to help researchers navigate the multiple collections, with their bewilderingly complex classification systems, has been sorely needed and will be much appreciated
