La caractérisation des processus de formation des sites représente l'un des enjeux majeurs de la Préhistoire car elle se situe en amont des autres problématiques. Encore insuffisamment prise en compte, cet article se propose d'en souligner l'importance. Dans cette perspective, sont rappelés ici 1) les différents facteurs mis en jeu et leurs conséquences sur l'intégrité des assemblages archéologiques et 2) les principales méthodes et règles impliquées dans l'approche de ce thème
