This paper employs arts-based research methodologies grounded in contemporary clowning and applied theatre practices to explore the generative potential of hope as a means to facilitate care. Written from our perspectives as applied theatre practitioners and clown performers, we explore the aesthetics, poetics, and practices of care and how it links to humour. Adopting a frame of ‘applied clowning’, we worked collaboratively with four members from the Second Chance Theatre Project to create an interactive game installation that could unlock possibilities for future-oriented thinking, and activate hopeful pathways, for those participants who live precarious lives
