This article presents questions and comments arising from a year long fellowship in the USA to examine arts and theatre work with ‘at risk’ youth groups. The article concentrates on the therapeutic and what the author terms fine arts intervention work of these groups. The main areas for discussion are the problems of using role‐play in cognitive behavioural programmes, the relative merits of a fine arts approach and how all these methods do in fact have common ground. It concludes by examining how rehabilitation programmes need to develop a total prevention approach if they are to challenge the retributive performance of punishment
