This paper describes the custom of Yahrzeit—noting the anniversary of the death of a close relative—as practised by Jews of European origin. Particular emphasis is given to this observance in the Hassidic community, which sees this day as a joyous commemoration of the soul's ongoing ascension in the afterlife. This custom is discussed within the literature regarding ritual as a potentially ameliorative aspect of the mourning process
