This essay discusses the conflicts that Evelyn Waugh saw at the heart of modern experience and of the modern art with which the young Waugh initially identified his ambitions. It traces this conflict through Waugh's travels of the 1930s, which took the writer in search of a modernist identity through the Mediterranean, to Africa, to South America and to Mexico. While Waugh sought to render through the terms of his perception ‘the peculiar favour of a galvanized and translated reality’, his quest more often led him into the heart of chaos, in time leading to a disenchantment with both the modern and the pleasures of travel
