Over the past few decades the journey around Australia, as far as possible tracing the continent's complete outline, has emerged as a latter-day ‘Grand Tour’. While an actuality for only a few, it is a dream for many, both Australians and non-Australians alike. While some variations have been introduced into the precise trajectory of the around Australia trip, a consistency in its major features had become generally accepted as early as the 1950s. By focusing on recent travel accounts, as well as earlier ones that established the genre, this paper attempts to unravel some of the contemporary moanings of such a journey. In particular it suggests that the journey around Australia and the travel accounts associated with it reveal a profound unease about the status of white settlement
