Recent research examining behavioural responses to the risk of sexual transmission of HIV has identified many of the factors involved, as well as a number of theoretical models by which to account for individual reactions. It has also raised questions about whether it is possible to develop a causal model likely to prove acceptable to the majority of investigators. Despite differences between them, a number of recent theoretical approaches share some key elements in common. By focusing on the relationship between partners rather than on qualities of the individuals concerned, they enable us to understand risk-taking in a new way. They give special emphasis to the ways in which partners arbitrate, more or less unconsciously, between the various influences that affect their behaviour. This paper examines how various approaches discussed in a recent European collaborative project have tackled this question. It works from the hypothesis that risk-taking is relationally rational and can be analysed as an uncertainty-reducing process. In this process, the individual is best considered as homo socialis rather than homo economicus
