Analysing excerpts from a large interview database, the paper examines the content, rhetorical structure, and apparent function of adolescents' moral argumentation in commentaries about sex. We compare the approaches of cognitive science and discourse analysis to the topic of adolescent sexual cognition, concluding that the discourse approach is more successful in identifying underlying gender-related ideological conflict. We conclude that if an ideology mobilizes a great deal of rhetorical and self-justificational energy, then sexual behaviour may also be affected by that ideology since personal behaviour is itself a major asset/liability in moral self-presentation. We suggest that altering the content of risk reduction interventions so as to encompass issues related to gender ideology may facilitate exposing the rationale of relevant sexual behaviours to examination and possible change.
