Histories of six women, three schizophrenic in remission and three depressive in remission, are described and discussed. Recommendations for further study are made. All six have the following characteristics: periods of sexual acting out alternating with living as a docile daughter with their mothers; first child born when subject was 16–18 years of age; much closeness to indulgent mothers during childhood; considerable isolation from childhood peers; erratic work histories; and preoccupation with death. The myth of Proserpina and her repeated annual moves from Mother to Underworld is used in illustrating characteristics of these women
