This article presents and discusses the results of a survey about initial experiences with Local Agenda 21 (LA 21) in German-speaking Swiss municipalities. It provides insight into the development of the discussion about sustainable development and the activities that are in line with Local Agenda 21. Local authorities point out opportunities and risks that go along with LA 21 processes. Further they bring up obstacles that hinder sustainable development at the local level. The results indicate that competitive services offering information, opportunities to share experiences, and consulting are welcomed and these ensure the diffusion and quality of LA 21 processes
