This paper is a revised version of the first Rachel Carson Lecture presented as a plenary address at the 6th International Symposium on Society and Resource Management on May 21, 1996 at Penn State University, State College, Pennsylvania. Rachel Carson was a scientist, writer, educator, and reformer who used the power of popular literature to reconnect people with basic human values toward nature and ecological relationships. The author explores how Carson achieved her mission by combining accurate scientific reporting with an appeal to human emotions and deep‐seated values. These strategies were used effectively in a recent project to help restore depleted populations of seabirds. Human dimensions researchers are encouraged to seek common values and to apply those values to conservation objectives
