Public concern and controversy about humans and wildlife living together in suburban environments is increasing. This study examines how wildlife professionals can use knowledge about suburban residents’ use of the media to improve communication efforts regarding problem‐causing wildlife species. Our study uses data focused on a deer controversy in New York. We use aspects of “uses and gratifications”; theory to describe and categorize people into information‐seeking (i.e., what types of information have they sought regarding a particular species?) and media use (e.g., how often do they use particular types of media?) typologies. We also use cluster analysis to segment audiences uniquely with regard to typical concerns, interests, and preferred media channels. We offer recommendations for planning communication with suburban residents about problem wildlife. Funding and support for the project were provided by the Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station Hatch Project NYC 403 and New York Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Project WE‐173‐G
