The aim of this article is to describe and provide evidence for the effectiveness of patterns of empathy in Southern African forms of healing. This is done through an evaluative literature review of the Rogerian perspective on empathy in relation to documented research evidence from Southern African sources. Quotations, experiential and behavioural descriptions and explications provide evidence of original patterns of interpersonal, social and transpersonal empathy that illuminate, extend, harmonise, broaden and deepen Rogerian formulations
