It is with great pleasure that I write this editorial for the first issue of Emerging Adulthood. The study of people in their late teens and twenties is not new. For decades, scholars have investigated the unique challenges and possibilities of the late teens and twenties (e.g., Arnett, 2000; Erikson, 1968). Demographic changes and new conceptualizations of the distinctiveness of this age period (e.g., Arnett, 2006a) have fueled new and innovative scholarly work on this age period. Furthermore, scholars studying this topic are not solely dispersed across professional organizations. The Society for the Study of Emerging Adulthood (SSEA) provides a home for scholars interested in the scientific study of the challenges and opportunities this age period provides. The coming of age of a new journal on this age period is the next logical step to solidify a common scientific outlet for scholars
