An admirable recent study of Dutch culture at the height of the Dutch empire is Simon Schama, The Embarrassment of Riches: An Interpretatbn of Dutch Culture in the Golden Age (New York, 1987). Schama's study, however, focuses almost exclusively on the life and thought in the Netherlands proper, seldom mentioning the nexus with the outside world, which had a crucial impact on the subject of this essay.2. This brief essay cannot deal with the broader history of the emergence and development of the Dutch language. See B. C.
